THURSDAY 8TH OCTOBER 2.00 - 3.30PM

LIGHTEN OUR DARKNESS

Modern Slavery and Our Response as a Community of Faith

FREE webinar

Modern slavery, the fastest-growing crime around the world, is all too often hidden in plain sight:  in the services or products we use every day, in the manufacturing supply chains behind the things we buy, in casual labour, in sexual and criminal exploitation.  For centuries the church has prayed daily that God will, in the words of the Evening Collect, 'lighten our darkness':  the literal darkness in which deception and wrongdoing can be concealed, and the spiritual darkness of our sin and confusion.  Accounts of modern slavery commonly allude to the crime in our midst being hidden by our ignorance or our reluctance to acknowledge the truth; and so in this webinar we pray that our darkness will be illuminated by the light of truth, and we will reach a clearer understanding of the problem of modern slavery, and the changes needed to overcome it.

Ahead of Modern Slavery Day 2020, the Church in Wales and Haven of Light, in partnership, invite you join us, in discussion with a panel of modern slavery activists from across the world.

This event will be hosted by journalist Julia Bicknell (Director of WorldWatchMonitor.org, and formerly of the BBC) and will include interviews and a panel discussion with expert guests, including:

Kevin Hyland OBE (Member, Council of Europe Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings; Senior Advisor to the Santa Marta Group; former UK Anti-Slavery Commissioner)

Rt Revd Dr Alastair Redfern (founder of the Church of England's Clewer Initiative)

Rt Revd Dr Joanna Penberthy (Bishop of St Davids and lead Bishop for Church and Society, Church in Wales)

Commissioner Christine MacMillan (Chair of World Evangelical Alliance Global Human Trafficking Task Force & founder of the Salvation Army International Social Justice Commission)

Pam Cheesley Hollinshead (Joint Regional President of Soroptimist International Cheshire North Wales and Wirral)

Forming a team to serve your local primary school

Those of you who know me will know that I carry a passion for work in schools.

One of the ways this has been expressed has been in Christmas puppet roadshows which we have run in North Wales for the last 15 years.

Last year, members of our team were keen to explore the question “what can we do the rest of the year?”

One answer is to take regular primary school assemblies using the excellent “Open the book/Agor y llyfr” material.

This is a great resource which is simple to use for even the most inexperienced of teams and is available in both English and Welsh.

(* See below for a quick quote from the web site or check it out in full at www.openthebook.net)

Already, there are over 20 teams using this material successfully across North Wales.

If you would be interested in forming or joining a team to offer this to your local schools or if you have any questions, please do be in touch.

Please DO forward this to anyone else who may be interested.

Don’t hesitate to be in touch if I can be of help.

Contact: Andy Hughes (Urban Saints Wales Director) 01678 530347 / 07968 826401

* Have you ever thought that children in schools might be missing out on what the Bible has to show them? They could go through their entire school life without ever learning about Adam and Eve, Noah, David, Jonah ... or even the life of Jesus and the stories of the New Testament.

OPEN THE BOOK offers a programme of themed and dramatised Bible stories at no charge to the schools. Each session is around 10 minutes long and fits comfortably into assembly times.

Our teams of volunteer storytellers use drama, mime, props, costume - even the children and staff themselves - to present Bible stories in ways that are lively, engaging, informative ... and great fun for everyone involved! So now, thanks to OPEN THE BOOK, children in schools will have the opportunity during Collective Worship to discover all the wonder and wisdom that the Bible can offer!

SAME SEX AMALAGAMATIONS & CONGLOMERATES

If you read nothing else, please read the following.  It may open your eyes... and hopefully take you to your knees... and cause you to rise up and take action.

Just in case you miss this on our "Crucial Issues" page, please take a moment or two to look at it, and consider...

Why is it called a "human embryo"?

Because it's a HUMAN!  If it wasn't aborted, it would grow to be like you and me!

And a human embryo is a person, a tiny baby, not an "embryo-like entity," a "ball of cells," a "product of conception," a "blob of tissue".. and to refer to it as a
fertilised ovum, a zygote, a fetus covers up the truth...

It's a new living genetically unique single-cell human organism, human zygote, human embryo, human individual, human being... it's a human baby!

No woman calls her parents to say, “John and I are having a fetus!”

Abortion is the destruction of a human life, a human baby!

VACANCIES FOR SUPPORT WORKERS AT PROSPECTS

Prospects is now recruiting for support workers to enable people with learning disabilities to live in their own homes and be part of their local communities within the County of Conwy. Full time, part time and relief hours are available.

Prospects is a Christian charity helping to transform the lives of people with learning disabilities by breaking down the barriers that limit individual choice. As an employer, we also recognise and value true potential - offering you the chance to make a real and lasting impact in what is a supportive, dynamic and empowering working environment. We seek people who are fully committed to our Christian beliefs and who will help us deliver a distinctly Christian service which will include praying for, and with, our community.

There are many ways in which you’ll be helping people with a learning disability lead a more active fulfilling life. Some involve simple, everyday tasks, such as a trip to the shops. Some are fun, like an outing to the cinema. Some can be far more demanding such as teaching living skills and providing spiritual support. But all are highly rewarding and come with a sense of job satisfaction that would be hard to find anywhere else.

Regular prayer for those we support is an important part of the role too. Which is why, as well as being a good listener and confident communicator, you will understand our values. You’ll also need plenty of initiative and patience, and an approach that’s organised, team focused and very flexible. If you don’t already have a QCF Diploma NVQ2 in Health & Social Care, you must be willing to study for this key qualification.

To request an application pack, please call 01492 878152

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY GUIDE FOR OLDER CHURCH AND CHAPEL BUILDINGS IN WALES

As part of an EU funded project that I am working on, I have formulated the guide on the options for sustainable energy solutions for poorly insulated and intermittently occupied older church and chapel buildings. It comes about following surveys of several church and chapel buildings over the last few months and have been struck by a "now" opportunity for many of those that were built or refurbished in the 19th century. The model for the area where the pews are situated is that this was a suspended timber floor. These are very often drawing to the end of their life and in need of replacement. This represents a once in a century opportunity to lay an underfloor heating system (which then allows a couple of lower carbon options to be installed) and keep people's feet warm! These low carbon options will soon be eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive.

The Guide is attached at the foot of this page.

Please feel free to circulate this to as many Church and Chapel building custodians as possible, and please inform the contact below of the approximate number that you have forwarded it to.

OIC
(
Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) STATES CALL FOR RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE IN EUROPE - YET PERSECUTE CHRISTIANS

While governments in the West have granted full equality and religious freedom to Muslims, in Muslim-majority states growing hostility and intolerance is being shown towards Christians. This is expressed in increased restrictions on their religious freedom and often in acts of violence. The OIC's appeal for equality and tolerance in the West would carry more weight if its members also promoted these values at home.

BE SEPARATE

How are we to be distinctive from the world?  Billy Graham teaches on "being separate" as believers.

What a timely word... for God's people (the Church) in the West - (though not so much in other parts of the world where real, biblical Christianity is growing greatly) - who have become hugely infected by the world, and its ways.

What happened to "don't let the world squeeze you into its own mould" (Romans 12:2)?

ISLAM EXPOSED
Let us love Muslims, as we love ourselves, as we are commanded to by the Lord Jesus Christ, exposing Islam as a false religion, so that they may come to know the grace and mercy that Christ brought, and that Mohammed denied.

Read the telling interview with Father Zakaria, an Egyptian Christian Priest, who, as an Arabic speaker, reads the original Islamic textual sources, and exposes the fallacies of Islam:

ONLY SURVIVING ALBUM
This is the story of a Hungarian Jewish woman who survived Auschwitz and found a coat belonging to a guard which she took to shield her from the cold immediately after her liberation. In the pocket of this coat she found a photo album. It contained pictures of what went on in this extermination camp. Imagine her reaction when she saw a picture of herself coming off of the train as well pictures of her family who were already murdered. This album at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem was donated by this woman in 1980 and will forever be displayed there. When you have 5 minutes of peace and quiet in front of your computer, watch it and consider passing it around to people that you know so they can share it and know about it. It is truly moving and important.
