LIGHTEN OUR DARKNESS
Modern Slavery and Our Response as a Community of Faith
FREE webinar
Modern slavery, the fastest-growing crime around the world, is all too often hidden in plain sight: in the services or products we use every day, in the manufacturing supply chains behind the things we buy, in casual labour, in sexual and criminal exploitation. For centuries the church has prayed daily that God will, in the words of the Evening Collect, 'lighten our darkness': the literal darkness in which deception and wrongdoing can be concealed, and the spiritual darkness of our sin and confusion. Accounts of modern slavery commonly allude to the crime in our midst being hidden by our ignorance or our reluctance to acknowledge the truth; and so in this webinar we pray that our darkness will be illuminated by the light of truth, and we will reach a clearer understanding of the problem of modern slavery, and the changes needed to overcome it.
Ahead of Modern Slavery Day 2020, the Church in Wales and Haven of Light, in partnership, invite you join us, in discussion with a panel of modern slavery activists from across the world.
This event will be hosted by journalist Julia Bicknell (Director of WorldWatchMonitor.org, and formerly of the BBC) and will include interviews and a panel discussion with expert guests, including:
Kevin Hyland OBE (Member, Council of Europe Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings; Senior Advisor to the Santa Marta Group; former UK Anti-Slavery Commissioner)
Rt Revd Dr Alastair Redfern (founder of the Church of England's Clewer Initiative)
Rt Revd Dr Joanna Penberthy (Bishop of St Davids and lead Bishop for Church and Society, Church in Wales)
Commissioner Christine MacMillan (Chair of World Evangelical Alliance Global Human Trafficking Task Force & founder of the Salvation Army International Social Justice Commission)
Pam Cheesley Hollinshead (Joint Regional President of Soroptimist International Cheshire North Wales and Wirral)
